For many busy Americans, it’s hard to imagine starting the day without a hot (or cold) cup of coffee. For those tired workers out there just rolling out of bed, this one’s for you: Happy National Coffee Day!
Today’s the day to celebrate your caffeine addiction and indulge in that $7 venti, quad, non-fat, one-pump, no-whip, soy mocha latte and really feel good about it. Hell, I might even get two. It is a holiday, after all.
And what’s the best part of holidays? Free stuff. That’s right, today is Christmas for coffee lovers, and fine establishments around the country are offering up free drinks and swag to celebrate the beloved roasted coffee bean. What this really means is you can look like a hero by bringing in coffee for your office mate… he doesn’t have to know you didn’t pay for it. It’s a National Coffee Day miracle!

Here’s where to go for more free coffee (in alphabetical order, for my word nerd friend):
Caribou Coffee: Instead of giving people free coffee (because that’d be too easy, nice, awesome?), for every cup of Amy’s Blend coffee purchased today, Caribou will donate a cup of coffee to nurses and families in cancer centers throughout the country. (Ok, that’s pretty awesome. I take back my snark.)
Dunkin’ Donuts: Free medium cup of Dunkin’ Donuts hot or iced dark roast coffee. You can also get a small latte or mocha for just $1. Available at participating locations only.
Jet Blue: If you’re flyin’ Jet Blue today, free espresso will be a flowin’. (Suggestion: don’t buy a plane ticket just for a free shot of espresso.)
Krispy Kreme: Free small java with donut purchase at participating locations.
McDonald’s: Participating stores will offer a free small coffee. Basically, this is just an excuse to go pick up two sausage egg McMuffins for breakfast. Don’t even drink that swill they claim to be coffee… just use it to keep your McMuffins warm on the ride to work.
Panera Bread: Rewards members can score a free cup of coffee today (actually, every day in September).
Pilot/Flying J Travel Stores: Free 16 ounce coffee, hot or iced. You’ll need this coupon to get the deal.
Whole Foods: Today and tomorrow, you can get a 12 ounce coffee for just $0.25. Apparently Whole Foods doesn’t understand the “day” part of National Coffee Day. That’s cool, we’ll still need coffee tomorrow.
What about Starbucks? The coffee giant that probably secretly invented this national holiday isn’t handing out any freebies this year. Instead, it’s kicking off a new goodwill campaign called “Starbucks One Tree for Every Bag Commitment.” Every time a bag of coffee is purchased in a Starbucks store over the next year, the company will plant a tree in a community of need to honor the families and farmers that work to produce your coffee.
Now, grab a friend and head to McDonald’s for some McMuffins… then hit up the drive-thru at Dunkin’ Donuts for some free coffee worth drinking.
